Security

Symantec announced its latest series of multifunction security products, the Gateway Security 5600 series. These are third generation appliances that are designed to meet reliability and performance demands of medium-sized enterprises. Each of the three members of the 5600 series house essential security functions such as integrated antispam and antivirus protection, intrusion prevention and detection, and a full-inspection firewall. These new products from Symantec feature performance throughput that scales up to 3Gbps.

Switch

Advantech has introduced the EDG-6528L industrial Ethernet switch. This switch has eight 10/100Mbps ports, as well as a flexible screw terminal design, surge protection, and DIN-rail mounting. The flexible screw terminals help to secure the lines so that they are not accidentally pulled loose. The switch also features a voltage range of 12 to 48 VDC to protect against the problems associated with unregulated voltages. The EDG-6528L switch can be mounted on either DIN rails or walls. It has an operating range of 0 to 70 degrees Celsius. The switch has auto-detect capabilities and will automatically select either MDI or MDIX. To aid troubleshooting, there are LED indicators on the unit. The EDG-6528L switch has a list price of $199.

Cisco Systems announced a number of Cisco IOS (Internetwork Operating System)-based software improvements for its Catalyst 6500 Series switches. By evolving its existing IOS software for Catalyst 6500 switches, modular Cisco IOS subsystems now run in independent, self-healing processes. To reduce unexpected network downtime via faster fault containment and recovery, Cisco has added Process Fault Containment and Stateful Process Restart features. Subsystem In-Service Software Upgrades should simplify software changes. Finally, by integrating the Cisco IOS Embedded Event Manager, IT professionals can enable process-level automated policy control.

Telephony

Ericsson has introduced a standalone version of the MX-ONE IP IP-PBX system. The new product offers business-class telephony for IP networks with as many as 7,000 users. The MX-ONE IP lets companies use analog, digital, mobile, and IP phones all within the same system. The same interface appears, regardless of whether the end user connects through a smartphone or a desktop PC. MX-ONE includes MX-ONE Manager, an active directory-based management tool. The product is compatible with Ericsson’s Solidus eCare for better integrated voice and multimedia services for customer service representatives.

Nortel introduced new and enhanced IP multimedia products designed to help enterprises extend the virtual workplace through converged communications. The new products include the IP Phone 1100 Series, WLAN Handset 2212, Secure Multimedia Controller 2450, Multimedia Communications Server (MCS) 5100 Release 3.5, CallPilot Release 4.0 Unified Messaging suite, Communications Server 1000 Release 4.5, and Survivable Remote Gateway 50.

Wireless

D-Link’s new DI-725 3G Wireless Mobile Router lets small businesses share a 3G wireless connection over 10/100 Ethernet or 802.11g. The Mobile Router is highly adaptable. Rather than creating separate routers for different 3G networks, D-Link opted to integrate a cardbus slot, letting users insert 3G wireless PC Cards compatible with EVDO, UMTS, or HSDPA networks. If you don’t have a PC Card, the DI-725 also includes a USB port for connecting USB-equipped 3G wireless phones. Four Ethernet ports let you share the 3G signal with four wired desktops, or you can share a connection with several 802.11g or 802.11b systems. An additional USB port allows the DI-725 to function as a print server for your local network, as well.

Camera

Canon announced two new upcoming network camera products: the VB-C50FSi Fixed Network Camera and the VB-C50i/VB-C50iR Pan/Tilt/Zoom Network Camera. Both of these new cameras offer a 26X optical zoom lens and a 12X digital zoom along with 30fps at 640 x 480 resolution. The VB-C50FSi Fixed Network Camera also features PoE, which lets the VB-C50FSi receive both data and power through an Ethernet cable. The VB-C50i/VB-C50iR Pan/Tilt/Zoom Network Camera has a wide range of pan and tilt capabilitieswith panning functionality of +/-100 degrees and tilt capabilities of +90/-30 degrees. The VB-C50iR is the reverse-mount version and offers a pan of +/-170 degrees and tilt of +10/-90 degrees. Both the VB-C50FSi Fixed Network Camera and the new VB-C50i/VB-C50iR Pan/ Tilt/Zoom Network Camera have audio functionality, which lets users capture, play back, and transmit two-way audio over an IP network. These cameras also come with VB Administration Tools, a software package that provides a panorama-creation tool, a view-restriction tool, scheduling, and more. Optional software packages are also available for purchase. The VB-C50i and VB-C50FSi should be available this month, with the reverse mounted VB-C50iR coming early next month.

Socket Communications launched the CHS (Cordless Hand Scanner) 7E, a compact scanning solution with advanced miniature linear CMOS technology that can decode most popular barcodes using an LED light source. The CHS 7E is compatible with Bluetooth enabled mobile computers, including computers operating on Pocket PC 2003 (Windows Mobile), Windows Mobile 5.0, WinXP, WinXP Tablet, Palm PDA, Symbian OS (Series 60 or 80), and RIM OS (BlackBerry). The expected battery life of the CHS 7E when operating under normal operating conditions is 10,000 scans using two rechargeable AAA NiMH batteries. A 110-250V AC charge module is included, and an optional vehicle charger is available. For Pocket PC’s and pen tablets, this scanner also incorporates a stylus tip built into the device handle. The CHS 7E has an MSRP of $398.

Minicom’s new DX Server Direct is an add-on accessory to the company’s DX System matrix KVM management device for the data center. The DX Server Direct lets admins bypass the DX System for direct access to the server from up to 330 feet away. In effect, the DX Server Direct acts as a crash cart to put admins in charge of a server should part of the data center fail.

For the new S-Series, Gateway is making its notebook components (port replicators, batteries, and AC adapters) compatible between all Gateway S-Series systems. Sony’s new VAIO BX series of notebooks includes a number of enhancements, many geared toward making the BX line more appealing to businesses. The notebook comes in three sizes with 14-inch, 15.4-inch, and 17-inch widescreen displays. Despite different physical sizes, however, all models can share peripherals (including docking stations and batteries) with other BX series notebooks. In addition, modular drives such as DVD burners can easily be swapped between BX series notebooks. The BX series is Cisco V.3 compliant making it easy to add to Cisco managed networks. Optional communication components include a WWAN module that lets users connect to Cingular’s EDGE network, Wi-Fi options, and Bluetooth. An optional camera lets BX series users participate in videoconferences from anywhere with a decent Internet connection.

Multi-Tech Systems released the FaxFinder Fax Server, which is ready to send and receive faxes out-of-the-box once it is connected to a digital line equipped PBX. The Windows-based FaxFinder features two standard analog ports for communications, an error correction mode, and support for standard fax communications, two-dimensional compression, and real-time fax compression conversion. The device receives incoming faxes, converts them to TIFF graphic files, and then sends them to the intended recipient with an email message. Multi-Tech Systems is selling the FaxFinder for $999.

Plasmon announced its new UDO (Ultra Density Optical) Compliant Write Once media. A natural for information lifecycle management and regulatory compliance, the Compliant Write Once discs feature certain data sectors that can be physically destroyed for data destruction. This leaves less trace of the deleted data than degaussing a hard disk platter, Plasmon says.

Neoware Systems introduced the e900 thin client, which is designed for extreme environmental conditions. Ideal for warehouse, manufacturing, and shipping floor use, the e900 is secure because it doesn’t store information locally. The solid state device features a hardened outer shell, a touchscreen, and integrated wireless for communicating data back to a central server. Axiomtek introduced the GOT-1840T, an Human Machine Interface terminal with an 8.4-inch, 200nit TFT LCD with 800 x 600 resolution. The GOT-1840T is notable because of its fanless design, 1.3G shock resistance, and support for several OSes. The GOT-1840T has RS-232/422/485 serial ports, an open bay for a 2.5-inch hard drive or a CompactFlash reader, a 16-bit PC/104 slot for an extended communication card, a DA&C card, or a PC/104 motion card. Accusys extended its family of RAID controllers with the ACS-89320 2GbFC-SATA II RAID controller, which boasts the same hardware architecture and RAID functions as the company’s ACS89310 controller. ATTO unveiled its Celerity FC-42ES 4Gbps storage adapter, which utilizes both 4Gbps Fibre Channel and PCI Express. Delivering up to 800MBps throughput per channel, the FC-42ES is backward compatible with legacy 1Gbps and 2Gbps Fibre Channel installations. The FC-42ES also features ADS for fast, effective data transfers, and its hardware design reduces EMI and can improve signal quality. NetSimplicity announced the Advanced Catering Management. This is a new module for Meeting Room Manager, NetSimplicity’s room scheduling software. Designed to help enterprises manage their catering options on a site-by-site basis, the new module lets users at multisite enterprises simultaneously schedule meetings using Meeting Room Manager and order catering for the meeting based on menus from that particular location. Xlab’s ISL Light 2.2.1 service has updated security features and proxy authentication libraries, as well as fewer bugs. ISL Light Users who take advantage of the ASP Subscription or PayPerUser Mode will note that the ISL Light Client and Desk programs use VeriSign Certificate. The software includes VeriSign Digital Signature and geoDNS, as well as two language files and IE http proxy authentication libraries. The software’s geoDNS improves load balancing, fault tolerance, and availability. The load-balancing servers drive the clients to the nearest optimal servers and use the IE libraries for authentication. ISL Light supports 12 languages.

Extended Systems announced OneBridge Mobile Secure 2.0, an add-on utility for Extended Systems’ OneBridge Mobile Platform, which provides mobile devices with access to the same security-policy management as other corporate devices. OneBridge Mobile Secure 2.0 offers separate device encryption and device authentication, which lets smartphone users answer the phone without entering a password while enforcing authentication for other critical operations. OneBridge Mobile Secure 2.0 has FIPS 140-2 Validation and Common Criteria EAL-4 certification. The software can encrypt data on external flash media cards. GFI released a new version of GFI WebMonitor, its access control plug-in for Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server that let administrators monitor the sites users are browsing and what files they are downloading. GFI WebMonitor 3 will now be offered as a commercial version that scans all downloads for viruses, performs proactive content filtering (such as preventing access to adult sites), and blocks files based on type, among other new features. GFI Web-Monitor also supports add-ons which enable it to identify and block malware including Trojans, adware, and spyware.

Shavlik Technologies is targeting its new Shavlik NetChk Spyware software at security-minded enterprises. The software can run multiple scans in fewer than 30 minutes. It also automates security patch management. The software protects against and detects both adware and spyware that tries to install on computers within the enterprise, including browser-delivered programs. HP unveiled the OpenView Client Configuration Manager for the enterprise management needs of small, medium-sized, and large businesses. Once installed, the Windows-based OpenView Client Configuration Manager can detect installed hardware and software, determine vulnerabilities and deploy patches and software to repair them, and distribute software and upgrades remotely or locally. Other features include a single management console and integrated security and inventory reports. The package includes a year of free updates and telephone support and costs $25 per seat license.

Netopia announced Timbuktu Pro Management Server. This new platform augments Timbuktu Pro’s screen sharing, remote control, file transfer, and integrated chat features by providing IT managers and administrators a centralized approach to remotely managing their Windows PCs and distributing software applications. The Timbuktu Pro Management Server combines a Microsoft Management Console, remote installation module, and centralized server. Software Resources International announced a new VAX 6000 emulator. The CHARON-VAX/6660 Plus For Windows series supports Windows and Alpha systems. Users can install any VAX operating system, including VAX/VMS, on CHARON-VAX/ 6660 Plus For Windows. CHARON supports binary programs, which don’t need to be modified or recompiled. CHARON can emulate a VAX 6000, model 660 with a total of six CPUs and support VAX memory sizes up to 2GB. SRI also has several new VAX emulators that support Alpha, including the new CHARON-VAX/6610 Plus For Open-VMS/Alpha and CHARON-VAX/6660 Plus For OpenVMS/ Alpha. CHARON can emulate an Alpha model 640 or more with six CPUs. It supports shared disk and NI clustering, as well as mixed clusters, and emulates up to 2GB of memory.

McAfee announced McAfee Secure Messaging Service for Small Businesses and McAfee Secure Messaging Service for Enterprises, two new services based on the Postini Perimeter Manager product line. These services are designed to offer email threat prevention and policy management to customers looking to minimize the resources required to secure and manage email systems. The McAfee Secure Messaging Service solutions were formerly referred to as McAfee Managed Mail Protection. This solution offers automatic and immediate email protection against the threats of spam, phishing, viruses, inappropriate content, denial of service attacks, and directory harvest attacks. Users can customize spam settings and whitelist or blacklist addresses. The McAfee Secure Messaging Services are managed through a Web portal and also offer simplified reporting regarding a company’s email security status.
